Meditation for Beginners
A trauma-informed workshop for these troubled times
Service Description
In this six-week series, we will explore the foundational skills of looking inward, finding quiet focus, and connecting with the unlimited inspiration, creativity, compassion, and guidance that you carry within you everywhere you go. We will explore how your physical environment can support your meditation practice; how to resolve common challenges like mental chatter, restlessness, or a tendency to fall asleep; and why you don’t have to sit still to meditate. Who Its For This workshop is designed for those who are interested in meditation but don’t know how to begin, or who have tried developing a meditative practice but felt unsuccessful. This course may also be beneficial if you have some experience in meditation but want the support of a small group to grow in your knowledge or motivation. Course Content -the benefits of meditation for physical and mental health -the difference between meditation and mindfulness -the spectrum of human brainwave frequencies and why they matter -the variety of goals or intentions that meditation can support -how to set up your physical environment to support a new practice -how to check in with your body and get your nervous system ready before you meditate -how to create a meditation anchor for when your mind wanders -the benefits of different postures and physical orientations We will learn six different foundational meditation practices, including moving meditation. Printed handouts of the essential concepts and skills will be provided, and you'll also have access to an online audio library of all the meditations we learn in class. Course Flow Each class will begin with time to check in. We will then review a new foundational technique, including an explanation of the focus or intention of that technique. We'll practice a mini version (5 mins) to see how it feels in your body, explore questions and troubleshoot challenges, and then practice a full version (20 mins.) We’ll end with an opportunity to ask questions and get additional feedback so that you can be supported in your at-home practice during the week.
